Police: Man Stole Gun Out of Display Case at Wallingford Business

Wallingford Police credit tips received from the public with assisting to make a quick arrest in the case.

WALLINGFORD, CT — With the assistance of tips from the public and other law enforcement agencies, the Wallingford Police Department quickly apprehended a man who stole a firearm from Delta Arsenal on Quinnipiac Street, according to Lt. Cheryl Bradley.

Wallingford Police responded to Delta Arsenal, located at 372 Quinnipiac Street, at about 4:20 p.m. on Nov. 17 for the reported theft.

Employees told police that they noticed a firearm was missing from a display case and after reviewing surveillance video, they saw a white male reach over the counter and steal a firearm, according to Bradley.

The employees provided the investigating officers with a copy of the video surveillance footage of the theft and also posted it on their own Facebook page.

The post generated more than 7,000 shares on Facebook and the tips police received from the public and other law enforcement agencies led police to identify a suspect in the case.

Wallingford Police arrested Michael Sasportas, 36, of Wadhams Road in Bloomfield, on Nov. 18 and also recovered the stolen firearm at his residence along with another firearm that was determined to have been stolen from West Springfield, Massachusetts in 2012, according to Bradley.

Sasportas was charged with two counts of theft of a firearm, two counts of fifth-degree larceny and one count of carrying a pistol without a permit. He is being held at the Wallingford Police Department on a $100,000 bond.

Bradley said Sasportas has pending criminal cases in Newington stemming from two separate September incidents involving the theft of firearms at a local gun store in that jurisdiction.

“The Wallingford Police Department would like to thank the public and the Newington Police Department for their assistance in identifying Sasportas, which resulted in his speedy arrest,” Bradley said.
