On October 30th, 1961 the Russians detonated the largest nuclear bomb man ever made – the Tsar Bomba. It contained the equivalent of 50 million tons of TNT, or 10 times all the explosives used in World War II.
It was the largest bomb ever built, the bomb to end all bombs. Had the bomb been any heavier it wouldn’t have been possible to safely test it. Two years after the Tsar Bomba was detonated, bomb testing would become strictly regulated by the Partial Test Ban Treaty.
